PBL
Analyze the problem:
Every year thousands of animals are imported into the U.S. and are held captive in zoos or as pets and this has a negative effect on the animals as a species and as individuals.
List what is known:
- The gray wolf is the most closely related species of wolf to the modern dog
- It is the largest wild member of the dog family
- Native to the remote areas of North America, Eurasia, and Africa
- Hunted across time by humans for pelts or out of fear, drastically reducing their original numbers
- Sometimes trained as hunting dogs
Develop a problem statement:
Although in drastic need of help in their recovery, the gray wolf is not meant to be held in captivity. Although the numbers in captivity are small, the numbers in the wild are small as well and the wolves should be released so that they may flourish in the wild once again.
List what is needed:
- Current number held in captivity
- Risks for humans/wolves
- Living conditions in captivity
- How/where are they captured
- How this affects the wild population
Actions/Recommendations:
The gray wolf is not endangered but the main concern is for people who treat these animals like any other household pets. The gray wolf is an apex predator and no matter how much you try to train it, it will always retain some of its predatorial instincts. Currently most laws in the US are that if you want to own a wolf it has to be a hybrid every state has a different percentage to what amount of “wolf” the hybrid can possess. For example if you have a wolf hybrid it has to be less than 75% wolf. Therefore, we recommend that we put much stricter laws on the percentages and make it illegal to have a wolf that is a first generation (wild) cross.
